Default gas tank papers

I hear a lot lately about the documents that may or may not be hidden on top on my gas tank. what info is on these papers? I have a 79, can you get them without dropping the tank?

You have to drop the tank to remove it if it's there. Here is one of the better examples I've seen. It's the build sheet for the car as it moved down the assembly line.

I "carefully" removed mine from my '79 by removing the gas tank filler door and rubber filler piece. It is at about 10:00 position. Obviously it is very fragile and is held in place by a strip of glue so be careful. As mentioned it is easier to drop the tank enough to get your hand up on top of the tank but I did it the easy way.

Here is some tank sticker info in the attached document. Since you have a '79 you can get a copy of your original sales invoice from here.

With a tank sticker or sales invoice you can get an accurate window sticker replica from here.

well did what Bobz said, removed the gas door and the rubber collar, looked about 10 o'clock on top of the tank...and all that was left was the glue and few pieces old crusty paper. It was like going on a treasure hunt with a map only to find someone beat you to it..

save the crusty paper......it's what is left of your sticker and adds to the originality of your car.

Yeah, save the crusty pieces of paper. Any chance the VIN is on one of those crusty pieces of paper? There is also an outside chance that the missing parts of the sheet have shifted to another part of the tank top or somewhere nearby. The only way to know for sure at this point is to drop the tank.

The good news is that now with the VIN you can get the sales invoice from Allied Vaughn and with the sales invoice you can get an accurate window sticker replica from Triple A enterprises window-sticker.com.

Having a tank sticker is nice, but you will find more information on the dealer invoice, including the original dealer, cost, when the car was shipped and when it was expected to be received, all the options, colors, etc.

Contact Allied-Vaughn. It's worth the $50 if they have your VIN in their records.

If you want to have a "window sticker" made for your car, you will need more than just the VIN.

For it to be correct, you need to supply accurate information on what options originaly came on the car, and the name of the Chevrolet Dealer the car was shipped to.

All this information is available thru "Allied Vaughn" in the form of a copy of the original "dealer invoice". This will cost you $50.00. ( got mine, well worth it). You can then use this to have a reproduction "Window Sticker" made for your specific car.

The links Bobz08C6 gave you will get you what you need/want...unfortunately, a "copy" of the original invoice and a "reproduction" window sticker is not as desirable as having the "real" build sheet. But they are still cool to have.

(opps...Easy Mike beat me to it...)

I have learned so much about owning a Corvette and loving the experience, the Forum has been a part of that. The folks on the forum truly like helping everyone through their issues and sharing information. The greenhorns can learn from the seasoned vets. So I hope we are welcome to share our learnings. I had no idea what "matching numbers" meant, now I do. I can bet you that the process I go through to buy my next vette will include checking this and many many more lessons learned.
