Is there any way to research VIN history on pre 81 cars? I would like to obtain history on my 79. Have had suspicious statements from seller and previous owner. Not a big deal, except that I can't get it registered due to lack of a title and mismatch on VIN between paperwork and actual. Both the seller and the previous owner have said that they are working on getting the appropriate documents to satisfy RMV requirements. I just bought this car and am anxious to get it on the road!
Thanks,
Ken
Work through your DMV on a title search. For original documentation, you will need to rely upon the previous owners, so don't rile them up. You might be able to obtain a copy of the original dealer invoice, but that may not resolve the VIN discrepancy mess. http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/...x.php?cmd=area
Just an update on my problem.
I have talked to the person/company that owned the car prior to the seller I bought it from and they have said that they will me mailing me the information needed to fix this problem. Also told me that he bought the car one to two years ago for $12,000 and put a few thousand into it afterwards. Said he would send receipts for what he added and work done and a spare set of keys. Sounds like I got a good deal but won't know until I get the information and have time to check the car out completely. One thing he admitted to: it was advertised as an L82 and has an L82 emblem on the hood. He said he put the emblem on because he thought it had the L82 engine. This kind of statements from someone who is a auto enthusiast makes me suspicious. Should get this resolved next week, when the documentation promised is received. I'll post again then.
I just read a post about Mike Moncrief of uscorvettets who sells on ebay. It's kind of scary. I bought mine on ebay too.

Don't wait for the info, post up a pic of the engine compartment. Assuming it is not "modified" in any way, you can tell by site.
