I did mine on my 79. I bought the primer, color, and semi gloss clear designed to use on interior fiberglass parts from Mid America. I used a scuff pad to clean the shells being careful not to sand off the texture. Spray a light coat of primer, then spray color in light coats until desired coverage is obtained being careful not to spray too heavy. You don't want to fill in the texture. After that dries, coat with the semi gloss clear. Looks like a new interior.
Painted the seat backs on my 76, used Dawn and scrubbed them good, let dry and then painted them with interior paint from Mid America (no primer). Appears to have adhered great. Agree with above, puddles can fill in the texture if you put too much paint in one spot plus painting really makes the interior look good.
IMHO, I would not try to remove the old paint, I would be afraid you might damage the seat back in the process.
