I am about to start reassembling my 79 interior. It is completely gutted. I just got my new dash in from wilcox.
1. Is there a wiring harness for the radio for aftermarket units or do you have to splice directly?
2. What are the demensions for cutting out a new opening for head unit?
3. Has anyone found a way to paint or restore the chrome trim on the plastic of the console and dash pieces? Iam gonna repaint them but the chrome film has peeled off in many places.
4. I was looking for cheaper alternative for the carpet insulation is the duct work rolls at home depot sufficient? and if so should I go with the fiberglass and foil or the foam and foil the fiberglass is thicker and the foam showed an R value of 30.
5. Also what is a fair price to get seat covers installed?
Thanks for any help.
Quite a few CF members have installed Reflectix under their carpeting. It's sold at Lowe's and Home Depot (cheapest) among others. Do a search on Reflectix here and you should find pics, as well as info on quantities, adhesives, joint tape, etc.

If you have an original cluster bezel in good shape, my advice is not to cut it. If you want a non-stock stereo, purchase one of the reproduction bezels already cut for the unit you have in mind. Keep your original bezel for resell/restore time.
For wiring in an aftermarket head unit, I bought a radio pigtail that fits an 85 Camaro that I will be installing (I think it was used on pretty much all 80's GM cars). Since I'm putting in aftermarket speakers in the front and rear, and I have to run a line for unswitched power, the only factory wires I could have used were the +12V and ground. By putting in a later-model pigtail that incorporates all the wires needed by an aftermarket unit, I will make it easy to change out headunits down the road since all I have to do is change the adapter cable to a new radio's connector, instead of having to splice into the car wiring.

I had this same question (kind of)
I planned on using Dynomat (sound deadening for car stereos primarily) as my insulation.
I planned on using Dynomat (sound deadening for car stereos primarily) as my insulation.
is that ok?
Dynomat is for sound deadening, it won’t help much for heat insulation. What most people are doing is installing the dynomat on the floor and some type of insulation over that. That’s what I did and it works well.

i bought 100 sq. ft of fatmat on ebay for 110$ shipped. same stuff as dynamat... works wonders and alot cheaper. gonna throw reflectix over it for heat+additional sound deadening and that should do wonders
as for the chrome, go to your nearest auto zone i know they sell chrome vinyl. maybe you can look into that
