How do you tell when your vette was built? Just trying see how close my casting dates on the motor coincide with the build date of the car.
Do you know where your trim tag is? If you open the driver's side door, there is a metal plate riveted to the door pillar. On it, you will find a code for the original paint and interior, and in the upper right hand corner, a date code for body assembly. When reading the code, there is a letter for the month, and then numbers for the day. "A" is the first month of production for your year, so for 1970, A=January, but that is unusual. A for '71 is probably August, which would make B=September etc. I am sure some of the '71 owners here know which was the first month of '71 production.
Also, if you open the driver's door and look at the side where the latch is to hold the door closed, hopefully you will still have a "blue sticker". This will have your Vin typed on it, and in the upper right corner there should also be a month and year of production. Examples, my trim tag is "C23", meaning a body build of March 23rd (she'll be 39 on Monday) and my blue sticker says "3-70" for March of 1970.
You can also get the serial number of your car and look on the registry to see the build dates of other cars close to yours (as already suggested).

No blue sticker, probably went in the the trash when car was painted 20 yrs ago. The number in the upper r-hand of the trim tag is K15. Last six of the vin is 119533. Thanks for all your help guys. I'll check into the registry too.

Sounds like a June 15, 1971 build date. Just curious, is yours an Automatic 454 Ontario Orange Coupe with black leather?

Post the numbers from the engine pad. We can determine the assembly date of your engine from that. Providing it is the original engine we can answer your questions in a hurry !

Sorry to hear that. When I bought my car, I swear the seller told me that the blue sticker got lost when the car was painted. Then, this winter, I was taking the doors apart to fix the windows and door locks, and right there on the door was the blue sticker. Obviously, I crossed in my mind a fact from a different car I was looking at, but boy does that make me feel old and feeble-minded! Anyway, the point is that the lack of a blue sticker is a bit of a bummer, but I thought I bought a car that didn't have one so I doubt it is a big deal for the average person. You can buy reproduction stickers if you want to make the car look more "factory".
I have a '71 SB with chassis month code B (don't remember the day code other than i found out it was built on a monday).
From what I gather from the other date codes on the car B must mean february for a '71.
It is supposed to be a #match car. It's a base model so i doubt that anyone would go through a lot of trouble to restamp the engine and tranny?
It seems there are differing opinions on the date codes for '71. Some say the month codes start in september '70 as is usual, others say it starts january '71.

I'm far from an expert here, but I am pretty sure they stopped building '70s in either late July or early August of 1970. If I accept that the A code was January for '71, I am then left with the question of what letter did cars built in Sept get? Oct? Nov? Dec?
When you say "It is supposed to be a #match car.", does that mean you haven't checked?

Yes, I checked that the vin on the frame, ID plate, engine and transmission are the same.
Not that it really bothers me; it seems the whole #match is more of an issue in the US and certainly not on base models (obviously if it was a rare model it would mean a great deal).

OK, that's good news because that means it was built on a tuesday instead of a monday
Some of the other info I had must be wrong instead then. I don't recall what parts I compared it to any longer

You can be comfortable knowing your car was not built on a certain one day. It may have been finished on a Monday, Tuesday, etc., but it took several days to build the new Corvettes.
