Anyone have any opinions on which mask is best for a '78 Vette? I'm looking at driving it across the state to my hometown and am not sure which mask is best, or which supplier to buy from for that matter... Should I go with the mini masks or the bulkier ones with the anti-luff deflectors?
ALSO, the dude I bought the car from slopped a TON of carnuba wax on the car during his detailing sessions and consequently I have a lot of decades-old wax/polish along many of the cars seams. What is the best way to remove this buildup? I tried to scrape a bit out but quickly realized I was scratching up the nearby paint. I'm hesitant to use nail polish remover or a bit of thinner which a buddy recommended. Any ideas?
Best nose mask is none! What they do while you're driving is rub the paint and create more damage than they prevent. Don't tailgate anyone on the highway.
Wax build-up is best removed by a fresh waxing. Put on wax, leave wet and remove while wet. Repeat until residue is removed. You can buy a wax and silicone remover from a paint jobber or parts store, if build-up is ridiculously bad. This product is put on wet and removed before it has a chance to dry.

i know a guy who had one on a 79 for a few years, he took it off, the paint underneath was destroyed from the dust getting trapped between the paint and nose mask, impossible to keep dust out.
better to repair a few chips now and again, then repaint the front end
Best thing I've found for old wax is PPG Acryli-Clean DX 330. You should be able to find it at auto paint stores. Use 2 rags, 1 to apply, and a second to wipe up the solution & dissolved wax. For built up areas, use a toothbrush and/or a plastic scraper. Good Luck
if your getting it out of crevices and cracks, a soft toothbrush is cheap, and easy....I just removed some 30 year old wax myself....dry soft toothbrush, good as new.
Nose mask, hmm - didn't these use to be called "bras"? Anyway, I have one with the corvette emblem on it that is basically useless. It becomes a soggy mess underneath if you get caught in the rain. It's got bendable tabs that wrap around the wheel wells for holding it in place (yes, tabs rubs on the paint) and the headlight covers were a PITA to put on and take off while driving from day to night since you had to roll up that portion of the bra over the headlights and slip inside elastic band holders. It came with my 78 when I bought it back in the 90s from the car's original owner. He also included matching side view mirror covers that were held on by sewn-in elastic . Those things mostly blocked a third of the view in the mirrors. The bra and side mirrors covers have been sitting in a box above the garage for about 15 years, probably dry rotted by now.
Thanks everyone! Yep, I wondered what freeway speeds might do between the mask and paint... Not buying the mask is easy; now I've got to labor on the wax build-up! Gonna be tricky on the black paint... Oh well, no biggie. The paint's not perfect anyway- just the way I like it!
