Assuming it's the same as my 79 the pin on part #6 on the left is the link between the handle and the mechanism...it can be disconnected (simple clip) from the mechanism and adjusted up or down on the rod which is threaded. That would be the first place I would look, either as an adjustment or to confirm that the parts aren't bent or disconnected.
Pull the door panel off to see what's going on. Most likely dirt & grime in the lock mechanism causing difficult operation. I opened both of mine up, cleaned, lubed and reattached a lock rod that came off, and replaced the return spring on the outside handle because it broke. Now both work smooth as silk.

That was my plan, but i hate ripping into a project only to be stalled by waiting 7-10 days for parts shipping.

If you need to get parts, just put the panel back on until the parts are delivered. You won't know for sure until you see what's going on in there. It's all very simple & straight forward.
