Default Steering column info please.

I removed the steering column to get to the clutch/brake assembly to clean and lube them on my 69 coupe. When I put the column back in, it won't go as far into the rag joint splines as it needs to. The mounting plate on the column is tight agaist the firewall. Any idea why? Is that mounting plate on the firewall adjustable? Thanks in advance for your input.

The column is collapsable. The shaft somehow got pushed back up towards the steering wheel. You need to pull the shaft out a little. Not an easy task. It goes in easy but does not come back out easy.
