Default Engine ID 1978 CP

Hello. New to the forum. I would like some help to find out what engine I have,I have a 1978 CP light blue. auto that I will be repairing over the year or so, and would like to know what i`m working with. I have been reading this forum for a while now and have repaired quite a few things thanks to the members here. The block code is V09I8TBD I looked this up and there was three possibilitys. So I looked up the casting number 3970010 and this wasen`t very specifc. 1969-1979 low HP 185 High HP 370 2/4 bolt main car/truck/vette If this is an L-48 is it that bad of a moter? good things, bad things about it. thanks in advance tefishe.

If it's "numbers matching", check the VIN code. The 5th digit is the engine code: "L" is L48 and "4" is L82.

L82 is the "high performance" option, 220 HP vs 195.

I'm no where near being a pro as I'm stumbling along like others - but the V09I8TBD seems like an odd engine suffix/code. I don't see the TBD code listed for a 78 in the Black Book or web sites online that have engine codes.

You have to look here. Does not appear to be a vette engine.

I don`t know if it`s a numbers matching car. The vin #1Z87L8S 409192. ( L-48 ) I am not a spring chicken and I cannot make out the smaller numbers on the block to see if it is part of the vin

Thats why they made digital cameras. Clean the area off and stick the camera down there

That engine suffix doesnt match up for a 78 so it will not be matching. Good Luck.

Thanks everyone.
the smaller # under the block code is CF3200 either 95 or 55 not a # matching car. That dosen`t matter, just wanted to know what I have to work with. I guess I will pull valve covers and look at casting # there

It's not- sorry. V0918TBD is a light truck engine built Sept 18 at the Flint engine plant.
