My 77 needs new seatbelts (badly!) and I found a guy on craigslist selling a set off a wrecked 78. The way he described them, they sound just like the set in the 77 - retractable lap/harness belts.
From what I gather the belts are lumped into year groups, 74-77 and 78-82. What the differences are exactly I can't tell...other than price!
So, will the 78 belts bolt up to my 77 with no problems or am I looking at some creative engineering to make them work? Or do I keep looking for my year group?
Not sure about the 77', but the 78' is a one piece belt that does not go through the seat back. Is your 77' the 2 piece type with the seperate shoulder harness? Is the retractor mounted on the rear wheel well? The 78' has the retractor bolted to the roof ''B' pillar.
Gary,
Thanks for answering and I apologize for my late reply.
My 77 is a one piece, the lap and harness connecting to the metal buckle. It appears that both the shoulder harness and lap belt are retractable - but don't hold me to that. The shoulder harness is the only working retractable piece right now. If the lap belt is also supposed to retract (and I think it is) then it's permanently stuck in the fully extended position and is completely useless at holding anything in place. The retractor is mounted to the wheel well.
What are the odds of easily jerry-rigging the 78 retractor to bolt up to the 77?
If the retractor is mounted to the wheel well, I don't think a 78' belt (which is mounted on the pillar) will work since the weight that triggers the belt lockup would be in the wrong attitude.

Excellent point. And problem solved...I found a set on Ebay that I just purchased for a 74-77, so should be an easy and direct swap out!
