Default rear end ratio

I dropped the rear end out of my 72 today. On the outside of the case, is the ratio stamped or can you decode the gear ratio from the serial number?

Temvette72

P.S. I turned the pinion and counted the rotations, and I think it is a 3.55, but I suppose it maybe could be a 3.70

look on the underside of the case and post the numbers you see there stamped on the bottom..
also on the side of the case you will see numbers cast also, post all those numbers also and we can let you know what you have...

Sine the rear end is oit , remove the cover and count the teeth on both gears.

The divide the large # by the small #, that is your ratio

I notice the chart doesnt mention AW (3.08) for the 72. Is that just an omission, because I'm pretty sure my 72 came with a 3.08?

Thanks.

remove the cover, look at the side of the RG. If original they will be GM stamped and have tooth count and date stamped in. If they're aftermarket, you may see a double DD (richmond) G in a shield(US Gear) or nothing(usually imported)
Check the endplay and case as well

Default rear end

in 1972 there was an 8-digit code located on the bottom of the differential carrier housing just forward of the rear end cover...the first 2 letters is the factory installed ratio...there was no 3.08...AA is 3.55...AB is 3.70...AC is 4.11...AX & LR are 3.36...this info is straight out of Corvette by the Numbers by Alan Colvin

308 was an active ratio for 72. Used on just about all the automatic cars.

Well, I pulled the cover off today, and counted the teeth. I came up with 3.36 ratio. The poster who mentioned that the ratio could've been changed brought up a valid point. Anyway, so much for me counting revolutions with any accuracy!!!
