Default "Replacement" Urethane vs. GM Urethane bumpers

I wanted to know if anyone has had good luck with the replacment urethane bumpers. They are only around $200 compared to a GM OEM bumper that is around $800 - big difference in price.

I went with the fiberglass replacement. Was not into having the rubber dry up a second time.

I have a new urethane front bumper that I got from Mid america. You can have that for $100 plus shipping. I went the fiberglass route. Mine is primered/sealed. I was not too happy with the fit, which means it fits as well as the original. I was looking for perfection, that's why I went fiberglass and smoothed everything in.

What materials did you use to join them to the body?

If you want a 'perfect' fit with no waves, you can get it with fiberglass ...or true-flex. I have done it both ways. I just put a urethane unit on my 81. It was a lot of work prepping it and trimming it where it needed. The fit is good, but it's more like original and that's what i was going for. Also, if you 'tap' something in the front, it shouldn't lead to secondary collateral damage which might occur with a fiberglass bumper. If you can get one for $100, off the forum, that's a great deal.

I really hate how much these things are just to be a cover, plus the 74 one is more because the lack of years in use.. Guess its like that for all cars though and its probably a fair price but it annoys me..

Just a correction, the urethane front bumper I put on my 81 I was referring to was the OEM unit from Ecklers. It was about $500. I bought it on a sale last year where shipping was free ...or it was 15% off ..can't remember which. But on that $$ amount, it adds up. Ecklers has the original GM mold.

Another expense you can plan on if you go OEM is adhesion promoter prior to priming. That cost me like $45 for a sprayable quart (PPG). You wouldn't need that for a fiberglass/trueflex bumper.

I first ground down the edges to form a vee, then filled the gaps with resin and strips of fiberglass. It is a long process of trying to get everything correct.
