Default exhaust question

I have a 73 which I just recently bought and while the eshaust is brand new its way to quiet, I'm not looking for anything to loud just something with a bit of a nice rumbler, now my question is....does anybody make a decent bolt on muffler that I won't have to do any hacking to put in? and if there is what ones do you guys think is the best...as always thank you

Default I was in the same boat as you......

I have a '75 vert and wanted just a little rumble, not so much I couldn't carry on a conversation or listen to the stereo. I bought a pair of Walker Super Turbo (maybe also under the name Dynomax). Vette catalogs sell them for something like $160 a pair!! I got mine through my local Advanced Auto Parts store for just under $100!!! I really like them.....some rumble when you put the "hammer down" but pretty quiet when just cruzen'.

I bought an Allen's stainless exhaust system about 8 years ago that is still in excellent shape. The aluminized mufflers need to be replaced. I believe that Allen's bends their exhaust systems to GM specifications and they have mufflers in both street and off-road configurations that bolt up to these systems. That said, if your exhaust is bent to the original specifications I would think that their mufflers should be a bolt in. I just don't know how loud their off-road mufflers are. I'd like to put them on my car, but I worry about the noise. Anybody have their off-road mufflers and how loud are they?

Since you have a 73 why not put on "sidepipes" - you can get them as a bolt on kit and just replace the back panel. The kit I have has the fiberglass covers which I painted black. And yes you must turn the radio up quite high as the pipes are Corvette loud.

Magnaflows....... Corvette Central sells a Magnaflow for C3s only that has both pipes welded to the muffler, just like factory. Great sound & look........

thanks all, it seems 73 is the bastard year...all the mufflers seem to be for 68 to 72 then 74 and up...not quite sure what the difference would be on a 73?

Guess what? I looked in my CC catalog & there's no Magnaflow for '73. But it does say this: '73 was the first year for the big round muffler that went to '78. It says if you want the hideway look '73 owners should purchase '72 mufflers with '72 tips.....

I just got off the phone with Mike Allen Jr, what nice people to deal with, he said 73 mufflers with super large and hideous looking and the hideaway off road mufflers are direct bolt-on and are much better looking than the factory units....and they give a Corvette Forum discount to boot. as always guys thank you so much for the info

I have magaflows on my 75 - they are flat top & bottom and can barely been seen - I got chrome tips at Pep Boys. Per Dr Rebuild - 73-4 were 7 x 9 oval - and inlet depends on motor size. 75-82 were 5 x 9 oval. Inlet pipe size depends on motor size.

Mr. Sidepipes,
The problem is 73 exhaust mufflers are one year only.
The inlet to the tips is centered, 70-72 are offset.
The early mufflers are offset inlet and center outlet, 73 is offset on both, but offset to the same side.
Most mufflers for early C3's will fit, the intermediate pipe is the same.
But you must change to the earlier tips.
Find out if Allen's mufflers are early or 73.
I am interested in new mufflers also and do not want to rattle my teeth.
But I would like to keep the 73 tips.
Thanks
Terry
