Could be tricky...do you have cruise control? On my 79 the little orange plastic nose that inserts into the fitting had sheared off at the cruise transducer...real easy to get to and a good first place to look if you have cruise. In the end if it's just the cable it's an easy fix. If it's in the speedo head it's a little more challenging.

The lower one & easy. You can disconnect the upper one at cruise transducer & spin cable to speedo to check. Most likely the issue is the transducer not turning easily.

I'd chuck up first the lower one in a drill and see if it spins the speedo. If so, then I'd disconnect the upper one and chuck it up and see if it still spins it. I think you have to run the drill in reverse.

Pretty good chance your cables are fine and your problem is the cruise control transducer housing, up near the firewall. The gears inside this are nylon and they breakdown on you.

I got a replacement from Mid America ($99) and it works great. I did replace the lower speedo cable while I was at it, but probably did not need to.

Speedo is silky smooth now.

Brent.
