I have a 72 coupe and I and working in the steering column. I've already replaced the key warning buzzer switch and the ignition cylinder (Thanks Jim Shea!!)
When I got the car it had no horn assembly but I did get a bag of horn parts. I have reviewed many diagrams but cannot understand how the Horn Cover has any "spring" to it when assembled. The three screws tighten down the horn contact and the cover snaps to it...but where's the spring action??
The device pictured after the horn button is in 2 pieces, riveted together with 3 plastic rivets, the round corrugated piece holds the horn button out of contact with the grounded column. When you push it, it makes contact, grounding the horn relay, blowing the horn. The rings go on in the order pictured, there is a plunger, not pictured, that goes in the hole in the steering wheel, below that needs to be in place to complete the circuit. C.

The spring action is in the piece with the nylon rivets. The horn button attaches to the knurled outer ring which is held up from the steering wheel by the rivets but flexes around the perimeter when the button is pressed.
Thanks. I think the key piece missing for me was the horn contact. I have ordered a new contact from Ecklers as the one I have in a bag has no plastic rivets.
I'll let everyone know how I do when I get the part.
Well it is all back together and threee things work that didn't before:
1) Warning buzzer only goes off with key in and door open (before buxxer went off regardless of key)
2) You can no longer remove the key while driving (old ignition cylinder was so warn that , while driving, you could pull the key clean out with no effect to the running car)
3) Horn works
The new horn contact did the trick as the plastic rivets allow the upper horn contact to flex. The upper horn contact is where the Horn Button\Cover conncets and snaps to.
Thanks to all, especially Mr. Jim Shea who always steers you in the right direction (couldn't resist)
2) You can no longer remove the key while driving (old ignition cylinder was so warn that , while driving, you could pull the key clean out with no effect to the running car)

That's interesting, how did you shut off the car before this was fixed?

Before it was rebuilt, the steering column in my '73 had the same problem - it does not affect being able to shut the car off (if you've pulled the key out while it's in the Run position, you just put the key back in and turn the ignition switch back to the Off position). Remember, pulling the key out is not what shuts the car off - turning the ignition switch off is what results in the car being shut off.
