I had to put the 74 on blocks to re-do brakes. About that time I noticed that the key wasn't going into the "Lock" position. I could take the key out though...and also turn the car on without a key.. im going to go out on a limb and say that's bad... I go the car on tires again and the problem still exists.
Can't turn the key to lock position and there's a lot of resistance trying to and there isn't a use for car keys.. What is its major malfunction?!
And while I'm at the steering column I'll also voice my complaint about the speedo.. I replaced the top cable because it was ripped in two probably 20 years ago. The bottom half looked ok so I left it. After crawling around every inch of the car and fighting with this thing it doesn't work.. The only problems I can see are either that the bottom half is just shot from something or other, or could it be some trimming of the cable to get it to fit in the bottom half of the cable?? If you made it this far I thank you and as always any help is appreciated.
Start with a new lock cylinder. It might cure all of your steering column/ignition switch/lock cylinder problems. For sure a new lock cylinder should cure your being able to start the car without a key.
