Default -69 turn-signal switch replace.

I have to change the turn-signal switch in the steering column,
and wonder if I will need any special tools to to manage this?
Or maybe a tip on how to do it?

thank you

Do you have a standard (non-adjustable) column or a T&T? They are slightly different in removing the steering wheel and disassembling the column head to get to the turn signal switch. The two special tools would be a hub puller tool and a locking plate compressor tool. Both tools are readily available. (Some automotive stores will let you borrow the tools for a short time.)

I have quite complete instructions available at www.corvettefaq.com

I have a Tilt & Telescoping Steering Column. I have found that removing the steering column from the car before pulling the turn signal switch wires makes the job a lot easier. I have found that fishing the signal switch wires and harmonica connector up through the column is a much easier task if the column can be held straight up and down.

With the standard column you might find that you can get the wires out without removing the column.

Good luck,
Jim

The best tool I made was to bend a large paper clip into a set of pliers. Beat down the ends flat and this is used to remove the wire pins from the harness connection. Just slip it into the clip to release the part of the pin that stands out. Pin pulls right out.

Not sure if the 69 is a flat connector or semi-circle like the 68, but a 68 you have to remove it to insert the wires through the column.

Yes you can remove the individual wires from the 1969-1982 harmonica electrical connector. Then the wiring will more easily pass up through the steering column head. However, it isn't a lot of fun lying upside down under the dash removing each wire (and be sure to get them back into the connector in the correct location and order.) The T&T column is lot more restrictive than the standard column.

This technique is covered in Disassembly & Repair paper #2.

Thanks for good info.
Lots of good info in your papers Jim, and
Budmans small pliers sounds very handy.
I can see that I got to get hold of a hub puller and compressor tool.

By the way, I have the standard column.

I don't think small pliers will work, but let us know. You are sticking the paperclip in the pin side to release the claws.
