how do i get this stuff off. Some previous owner of my car slathered on a bit too much and now i need to replace weatherstrip and the gunk is nearly impossible to scrape off.

You sure that it was a previous owner? Mine was original from the factory and the brownish/yellow adhesive was smeared all overt he place on the door weatherstrips.
IMHO the quality of GM parts back then was vastly superior to what you get today, but their fit and finish on the assembly line left a lot to be desired.
