Can I do burnouts with an auto trans?
Yes you can if you have enough horsepower.
Is there a way to modify the older trannys to be more "sporty" (e.g., shift at higher RPMs)?
Shift kits
I always thought I'd hold out for a 4-speed but the vette I have is an auto trans.
To bad IMO. Just kidding
Will I regret this on autocross days?
Yes again. Not really. You can hold it in whatever gear you want. If the trans is in good condition it will work fine for most applications. I just prefer driving a stick.
Two things:
#1 Horsepower
#2 Tires new or not ?
With my old hard tires I could light em up but with my new tires I get small chirps
Add a shift Kit. it will make it shift better.
I would say yes, the wife will generlly say WTF is wrong, if you have a shift kit. I had one in my 71 Cutlass and loved it. In fact in a modified car, I wouldn't have an auto with out one. You cant' beat chirping the tires when it hits 2nd gear.
When it says "hard shifts", does that mean that if I'm out for a weekend spin with the wife she'll ask me WTF is wrong with it?
Depends on the shift kit. Some just firm up the shift. Others will jar your teeth out. There are usually different levels of shift kits.
Don't forget a stall convertor. This will allow you to launch with higher RPMs and also, it will take the shock out of a hard shift (if you use a shift kit that does so.)
