Default Another bumper question

Hey fellas... and ladies... another bumper question for ya.

I ordered a tru flex bumper and it won't fit onto the car due to the metal framework piece that sticks out in the front of the car. The guy at the place I ordered it from said it needs to be removed from the car since it was only there to help the original urethane bumper hold it's own weight in the first place.

Anyone ever hear of this before?

Yes, that is what I've been told as well. What you need to hold the flexy glass or rigid fiber glass bumper cover is a special retaining kit. Willcox has them. Look in their bumper hardware section. You need one set per bumper.

Which metal framework are you refering to? If it is the bumper support, the Trueflex should fit over it.

I assume this is the support you are referring to:

I installed my 73 TrueFlex over the bumper support without issue.
The bumper support ties the frame and rad support together, incorporates the vacuum chamber for the headlights and provides the mounting points for the grills.

Try to keep it if you can.

I think we need to clarify. It is my understanding that you need...
this to hold 'glass bumpers in place:
http://willcoxcorvette.com/product_i...ducts_id=11663
and this inside the body 'glass:
http://willcoxcorvette.com/product_i...ducts_id=12554
However, you will not be in need of this:
http://willcoxcorvette.com/product_i...ducts_id=24024

Now, these may not be for your year. It's for my year and I didn't include all of the pieces, just one for example.

Is that last one you are having trouble with?

Since you don't mention what year this is but your avatar shows a '73 I'll assume as much. You need to get rid of the support that runs across the front of the bumper that would normally support the urethane bumper. If it it is a '75 and on, you don't have to remove anything, but you need to grind the lip off the top the metal support and grind down the top of the plastic impact core.

You're right... '73.

This is to what I'm referring. I think perhaps I need to tear it all down again and try and figure it out.

I did this on my 73. WhenI first put it on I had the bumper bar in place but later I noticed the fiberlass poping where it touched the bar so I took it off and removed the bar.
Bumper install

The bar is laying on the floor in this pic

I think if I wanted to I could get it to fit better but it isn't needed.

So it looks as though that bar isn't really functional.

I guess that depends on whether or not you feel a bumper is functional.

Haha, there apparently was a picture here my at-work network didn't let thru (it shuns photobucket) that would have helped me out a bit Sorry for any confusion I may have caused and good luck with the solution.

This is the best point I've heard on this subject yet.
