Yes, if you use the right stuff. The best I have found is sold at Napa. Dark green can with a black top and an extra red nozzel. Says "Nascar" on it..

I did a car years back with canned undercoating, and though it came out OK, felt a pro job would have been better, and maybe even cheaper. The canned stuff I used was fairly thick, and under high pressure, so when you pressed the nozzle, the can would empty in seconds. Took me a case of cans to do the whole job.................And then the cleanup after...........OMG!!!!
If I were to do it again, it'd be cheaper to pay the pro's.
My buddy used the spray on bedliner stuff as an undercoating and on his engine bay of his car.. looks VERY good still after a couple of years. I would recommend that to anyone after seeing the job he did.
I used 3M "professional" undercoating from Wal Mart on my 70 LT-1 after spending $18K for a new paint job. Like the old saying oes: "a can a day keeps the star chips away" in other words, I used a full can in each wheel housing to coat the feneder where a stone impact will cause a paint failure that I know as "star chipping". One word of advice, wear a hat/respirator while doing the job and do it in a well ventalated area (don't ask about the hat recommendation just take my word on this piece of advice!)
Many years ago, I used the spray can stuff on the wheel wells of a '68 Camaro and was very happy with it. Don't remember the brand name but I think it came from K-Mart.
A few years ago, I detailed my C4 with a water based undercoating I got from J. C. Whitney. It came in a gallon can and I applied it with a sponge. Put on 2 coats and it was probably still thinner than what a spray can would give but I wanted appearance more than protection. It was a little tedious to apply but it could apply it exactly where I wanted and there was absolutely no cleanup of other underbody or suspension parts. Also, no respirator or noxious fumes which was important since I did it in a closed garage during cold weather with a gas heater running.

I used black rubberized rockgaurd ..has a slight texture and is resistant to chips. Easy to touch up if required and is washable. Dirt & dust will stick to regular undercoating
