My 76 recently started idling rough. I have to keep my foot on the accelerator to keep it running. Any ideas? I tried to adjust the idle but could not increase it.
Could be lots of things, but here are the easiest to check:
Fire - check the condition of the spark plugs and plug wires. Unless all 8 cylinders are firing it will run rough.
Filters - check the fuel and air filters. If they have trapped a bunch of stuff flow is restricted and the engine can run rough.
A bit more difficult to check but not too bad:
Fuel - make sure you are getting plenty of gas to the engine. A dirty carb or fuel pump that isn't getting enough gas to the engine can cause it to run rough. A bad tank of gas can also cause a rough idle.
Compression - make sure you have good compression on all cylinders. Low compression can act like a bad plug or wire.
Check for a vacuum leak somewhere too. Maybe a hose has a crack in it or one popped off. Check all the vacuum lines including the one that runs down to the vacuum modulator on the transmission if your car is automatic.
