Default Tach cable help

I just installed a new tach cable. I know the end into the back of the tach is engaged by spinning the end that goes into the distributer. But when I screw the cable onto the distributer and start the car - nothing registers on the tach. The cable housing seems to be long enough, could it be too long?

Suggestions?

Are you sure that you have it fully pressed into the back of the tach?

Its possible the brass tach gear in the distributer could be toast...the Vendors carry the parts to repair

I have an MSD distributer. When I put the cable in I can't feel it hit anything. I can't see inside the distributer connection hole.

For an msd you need the little adapter that slides into the distributor.
