well you need to pull the console out, so you need to pull the carpeted side pieces, so you need to pull the seats. haha. once you get it out flip it over and the switch should be easy to remove

now that you have come this far might as well do new seats and carpet. Should do the doors as well because they will look different from the sun. Good time to rewire the rear speakers and install new ones too. That back trim around the rear window that has been collecting dirt for 30 years could use some new paint..... Just pull the body off the frame and get to it!!!

Sounds like what my local Corvette shop would do if I took it in to them to do. 
I have the side panels off already. I took them off so the stereo installer wouldn't screw them up.
I'll look at what it takes to remove the lower console. Hopefully not too much work!
