This was years ago, but the gear was stripped in the distributor. The gear on the distributor shaft was also stripped so I needed to buy both parts. On my 71 there was a button inside the body of the distributor that was also worn and needed to be replaced. I understand this button provides the proper lash between the gears and when the button failed the gears went next. Hope this helps. Good luck.
Just remember to look at the simple solutions first, is it unplugged, did the cable come loose, is something in a bind, etc. Think KISS, (Keep It Simple Stupid), no offense intended.
IMO cable driven tachs are a POS from the git go, with NO way to ever fix reliably, just like speedos tend to over indicate so will a cable tach...there basically is nothing to do about that fact....
IMO, replace with a HEI dizzy and a '75-77 tach, it's about all you can do....
unless you buy decent aftermarket instruments...that's a solution...
