Wood shift knob?

Wood shift ****?
My '76 has a 4 speed with a wooden shift ****. I have seen other '76 Vettes with wood ***** as well. Was this a '76 thing only or did all these cars come with the black chrome and then were later changed out by the owner? The wood looks like walnut, which matches the door panels.
All I see in the catalogs are the chrome or black chrome *****. But then again, '76 is a bit of an odd year with the different steering wheel, etc. Just curious, I like the wood **** (doesn't get hot when I park the car in the sun..)
