Is the Corvette doomed or is it going to be rescued? Has "The Great American Sports Car" met it's demise because of the ineptitude of the GM braintrust?
Five GM performance models get the axe
By Justin Couture
Axes continue to swing at General Motors as the company scrambles to restructure, but the latest cuts won’t affect factories or the head count. This time around it’s cars.
For GM performance fans, 2010 is looking to be a dark year as numerous spruced up vehicles under the Chevrolet, Pontiac and Cadillac brands have been cancelled.
At Chevrolet, the 303-horsepower Impala SS is no more, marking the demise of GM’s LS4 V8. Also, the turbocharged Cobalt SS sedan and HHR Panel wagon have bitten the dust. The Coupe will stick around, though.
Over at Cadillac, the brand’s halo performance sedan, the supercharged 469-horsepower STS-V, has been phased out. This somehow isn’t surprising - though the STS-V was an impressive performer, its $105,075 price tag ensured that it was never a big seller. This means the sole remaining V-series Cadillac is the CTS-V, as the XLR-V luxury roadster is also gone.
Finally, there’s a casualty at Pontiac. Yes, it’s true that Pontiac’s days are numbered as a brand and the G8 will keep its head above water until the very end, but the more affordable G6 loses its range-topping GXP model. The sporty GXP possessed the G6 line’s best engine, the 252-hp 3.6-litre V6.
But there is some positive news to emerge from this: GM’s CEO Fritz Henderson says that the Corvette will live on despite the tough times.
Corvette will be fine, but GM is shutting a bunch of plants down for 9 weeks this summer. That's going to hurt a lot more than the 1 week for Bowling Green.
GM shuts plants down every summer, this summer the duration is longer than normal. the Corvette isnt going anywhere
Come on man, what planet you on??? think for a nanosecond the .gov would NOT want to kill the primary symbol of the Naderite hatred for some 45 years now???
when Naderites/green weenies now run GM and the .gov???
what are you smoking man.....they just waiting for the best timing to make the announcement....
unfortunately....
and you ALL should know how I would deal with the green weenies....

Wow, someone's been smokin' somethin' green! .....
If a product generates profit, the company will produce it. Corvettes are not that profitable, because of the amount of engineering that goes into them and the low overall market. But Corvette is synomomous with Chevrolet. As long as Chevy is around, Corvettes will be around. I just wish management would learn how to run their business and make a profit. Otherwise, their days are numbered. I can't imagine America without Chevrolet. Remember when they were gonna make a cheapo Vette? Roll up windows, cloth seats etc. They woulda sold a bazillion of them, but instead they chose to make the upscale cars.

Don't expect it to be cut all together, but a hiatus is fine. Let's be honest, there doesn't need to be a Corvette model, or any other model, for EVERY year.
G'day,
Paranoid beat me to it, the article is from LAST YEAR!!! Also, consider this, would GM really give anyone four months notice of even a temporary shutdown??? Get real.
There IS an answer to keep Corvette production rolling at current numbers, and that's to make a Right Hand Drive model. I've seen them (LHD) being built when I was in BG in 2003, it can't be too hard. Just a different firewall/dashboard module to drop in, and a slightly different engine/suspension/steering module to lift into the chassis.
Headlights that dip to the left and perhaps Euro style orange rear indicators are all bolt on stuff that a monkey could do on the production line. There's plenty of wealthy people in RHD countries that would jump at the chance to buy a RHD Corvette from their local GM dealer.
Come on Fritz, do the research and make the decision. You'll also be making money that you currently aren't.
FWIW, I was on I-40 at Tucumcari, NM a couple of weeks ago- car hauler setting there had 8 (yes that's EIGHT) brand new, bright YELLOW ZR-1's on the wagon.
The Corvette division is staying put as of a May 11, 2009 article. The CEO was quoted saying -
"the Corvette is 'one of our strongest (if not our strongest) nameplates in the entire GM lineup. We intend to keep this car fresh and in a segment-leading position.'" "Henderson also reiterated a phrase GM has used recently in defending the Corvette's business case against potential attention from Treasury Dept. pencil-pushers, insisting the low-volume two-seater 'pays the rent in terms of profitability and cash flow.'"
"'I also own one, love it,' Henderson added".

Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
Slideshow: A Jaguar designer's personal project imagines what a modern front-engined Corvette might look like if Chevrolet revisited the golden age of the Stingray.
