A friend is restoring an 81 and he needs the correct rivets for trim tag and VIN tag. No, he's not counterfeiting a car, he just took the tags off to paint the braces. Where can he get correct rivets........rivets only?
VIN tag rivets are rosette rivets, illegal to sell, but can be found, for the right price.
I can understand the rosettes being illegal due to unscrupulous activities - but it doesn't seem fair to the home garage guy who had to rebuild their entire windshield frame due to massive rust and corrosion, therefore being stuck removing the VIN tag. So my question would be, how does one legally obtain the rosette rivets in cases like this?
the solution by the lawmakers is to go to the DMV and get yourself a new VIN# and they will give you a tag.... fun fun fun.... thanks big brother for watching over us!
I believe that trim tag rivets are standard pop rivets. Easy to find.

You have to understand, the incidences of the "home garage guy" relpacing his VIN tag as compared to the stolen cars in this country are microscopic. The states' DMVs have to guard against this, no matter how inconvenient it is to the hobbyist. And frankly, I can't think of a good reason to take off a trim tag or VIN tag unless there was specific damage to that section of the car. "Taking them off to paint?" Even the extensive rot that appears in the 68-72s is usually concentrated to the corners and top section.
That said, as joewill pointed out, you have to run this through you DMV. They may oversee the re-attachment of the original VIN tag. However, some states will insist on a re-issued VIN, and those funny numbers scare buyers away.
This car has been stripped as far as can be without removing the body. The windshield frame has been repaired and welded. There was zero reason to touch both the trim tag and/or the VIN tag. You can see the trim tag if you look closely... it had masking tape over it for the entire strip/prime/paint process. Remove them... for painting? On an '81?
