Hello again from KCK. I just ran into another problem with my 79 Vette.
Two weekends ago I installed the edelbrock performer series intake that would mount my new edelbrock carb. Here's the problem: No matter how long I drive it, even for 30 min, I turn the car off and i hear the radiator overflow tank gurgling and popping. I have taken off the rad cap and burped my system and it still gurgles and pops. Reason being I am concerned is that the radiator fluid is spewing out of the overflow bottle and getting on my chrome valve covers. I have also tried drilling little holes in the overflow cap. And to no avail, still there is nothing to vent the coolant.
Has anybody gone through a gurgling and spitting overflow? Driving me nuts!!!!
You have not mentioned anything about your thermostat. Is it new also? For sure is it installed in the right direction? Another thing importent to check since you replaced your intake manifold is the timing set correctly that will big time cause the engine to overheat.
Engine is set to coreect timing prefrences. And the thermostat is in the right way.... lol Im not overheating ether but while I get done for a drive, that radiator overflow is bubblin and gurglin. I know its not supposed to do that.
Curved_edge, I'm no expert.....my guesses.
Is your Radiator too full triggering the overflow? Recommended levels are much lower than one might think.
Check your seal between the radiator and cap. If they are not seated perfectly, pressure will leak through to the overflow at lower temps and pressures
What is your temp gauge reading?
Any simular problems before the intake install? Has a gasket shifted during install? Any indication of loss of engine performance or white smoke?
Did you drill a hole in the T-Stat? It sounds like what you are sayint is that After you shut it off the car is boiling over, but ok while your running? Is that right? That might be caused by air trapped behind the t-stat. A 1/8" hole will put a stop to that.
Well, all the gaskets are working good. no leaks that i have seen. And no white smoke thank God! Its not overheating by any means. It heats up half way and stays mid range consistantly.
I have NOT drilled holes in the thermostat and or the rad cap. I have drilled little 1/8 holes (3 of them) in the rad resivoire cap because the overflow bottle doesn't have a pressure release hose. (Like the newer cars have)
But the car runs great except after I have it idle or turned off because i can hear the overflow bubbling. And i know it spews out because of the evaporated rad fluid on my chrome valve covers!?!
If it were me, I'd check to make sure the radiator cap is a 15 pounder and the the lower radiator hose has the speing in it. Secone is the radiator ever been cleaned and or flushed out? Lastly, Did you have the system pressure tested? My 79 was a car that I showed, so I had a spring in both the lower and the upper hose. Also, when you installed the intake manifold, are you sure you used the right intake manifold gasket ? because some gaskets could block some of the coolant passages

The gasket set is the right one. The rad cap is a 12 pound cap. You say 15 eh? hmmm...the plot thickens...
The radiator was completely flushed out with the engine a year and a half ago. And I only put 6-7k on her.
I haven't had th esystem pressure tested......good idea....
