Default DynaMat,Reflectix,or both

What do you suggest?

I have both noise and heat (big time) issues to resolve.

If both which one is installed first?

TIA

If it were me and I could afford to do both, that is what I would do. Dynamat will help keep the noise down, plus some of it has the reflective side to it. Reflectix is like bubblewrap. It is very light weight and easily worked. I say that because I only did reflectix in mine and now am pretty darn warm on hot days. Wishing I would have done more when I had the chance years ago.

Thanks for heads up, Eddie 70!

I did buy the reflectix already, it doesn't have an adhesive backing, so I'm guessing the Dynamat would be best installed under it? I hate doing things twice!

I don't recall seeing many people doing both and I would guess because of the thickness both layers would present. I did see a tip that someone posted for removing the residue left from the factory pad that I wish I would have thought of. They used a die grinder or drill with a wire wheel on it and used it to remove the left over "hair" from the pad and made the floor very nice and clean for the dynamat.

BTW, there are some alternatives to dynamat out there that may be a little cheaper and some claim not to have the asphalt smell associated with them. One I can remember right off the top of my head is Brown Bread. I think they even have some especially for heat blockage.

Here is another post with someone showing their work. You have probably already seen the post but here is the link anyway. One of the guys is using Fat Mat for his and it looks nice.

It does look nice! The Dynamat has a "smell" to it, and the others don't?

I'd have to say the only place the thickness might be a problem would be under the gas pedal (under the seat tracks too)

Just going by what I have read on some of the posts. I have no dynamat in mine and wish I did.

Doing both. Only doing refectix against the firewall or where heat will be an issue (I have sidepipes so floorboard heat shouldnt be a problem), and I'll skip it right under the accelerator (thickness). I double up the Dynamat Extreme against the firewall, over the tunnel, and over the wheelwells, sources of most noise. The stuff is just not that thick to interfere with interior parts or carpet.. From reading, Dynamat does very little to stop heat, and reflectix does very little to stop noise, but together they work well for both. Dynamat HAS to go down first and adhere to the body panels to stop the vibration (noise). The reflectix lays on top of the Dynamat, and can be glued lightly with spray adhesive or just lay on top.

Looks great Rob, now that you have practice want to install mine
Are these products available in retail outlets, like Pep boy's etc.?

WB
WB,

Yes, but very pricey (and not at Pep Boys, etc)! I ordered mine from ebay with free shipping. Only found the Dynamat locally at stereo installation outfits. For instance, a package of Dynaliner (under hood product) is $50 on ebay, including shipping. The EXACT same package is $149 at the local stereo install place!!! And thats whether they install it or you do it. Seriously, I spoke to them just a couple of days ago.

I did a lot of research on the various products (FatMat, Brown Bread, etc) and concluded that, though a bit more expensive, the Dynamat is probably the better product (my opinion). $200 (approx) will do the entire cockpit, with some to spare. I certainly did not want to do this twice (not practical) and not to mention, while the interior is out...well, its just not cost effective (again, my opinion) to try to save a few $$.

I dont think the smell is an issue.

From what I have read, the Dynamat does little, if anything, for heat. Reflectix (Home Depot, $15) is the way to go for heat.

Again, I dont think thickness is a problem either.

Hope this helps!!

Rob

The Corvette Restorer issue winter 2009 had a comparison and HushMat did the best job for heat reduction. It was compared to Corvette Central ceramic heat barrier, Kool Mat, and Energy Q radiant barrier. Ed

I bought the Corvette central Ceramic Heat Barrier. Can't wait to see how well it works. I read that article about the Hushmat. It's supposed to work the best. Isn't it the most expensive?

Eddie,

The glue/hair residue comes right off by scraping with a single edge razor blade in a holder. I tried the grinder until I discovered the blade method.

As I recall the earlier Dynamat and many other sound absorbers were asphalt based (smelled when hot) but Dynamat Extreme is latex based and does not have the smell issues. So whatever one you get, make sure it is not asphalt based.

I found a crimped wire cup brush on a mini grinder did a super quick job of removing the old "hair" from the interior.

You are probably right as the Dynamat Extreme does not smell of petroleum based product.
