There is a machined pad on the front of the engine, just under where the passenger head attaches to the block. To the left of the water pump when viewed straight on.
Should be 3 series of numbers:

1 has the partial VIN,
1 has the engine casting place, date and application
1 has some other stamped number that I don't know!

Mine is not the original engine, but the stamps mine has are:
10C118264 (which is the partial VIN, the "0" is for 1970 I believe, last 6 is production number)
V1006CNR (which shows the block was cast in Flint, MI on Oct 6th, and is for a 300hp full-size with auto)
W729 (I have no idea what that means)

Hope this helps!

You don't say what year engine you are talking about so this will refer to most GM motors, look in front of the passenger side cylinder head, where it attaches to the engine block, there should be a pad with the identification code and the VIN stamping number there. However if the block has been decked there will be no trace of numbers on the pad. Good luck and let us know what you found

Should be 3 series of numbers:

...Unless it is a '70 produced during the first few days of production. These had the VIN stamped next to the oil filter. This is how my 1st day production '70 was and because of it, the NCRS judging manual was revised.

That is how mine looked until I cleaned it up this year.

OK, I'm still waiting for the explanation on the 3rd series of numbers.
