Default dmv question.

Hi folks..........Heres an really important one. If I registrar my 81 in one of our countys, I would not have to go thru bi annual smog inspection ever again. You read that right, ever again...........so, I'm reading the back of the registration slip in the glove comparment, and it says ( if I read it right, and heres the question), put the address in the other county, but the mailing address for the renewal can stay the same. .......really? how cool would that be. My mother in law lives in that county, and still loves me.............ok so I need some in put. what do you guys do? ..........thanks ...bryan........ps......california.

But you already own it don't you? My guess isyou would have to "sell" it to your mother in law. I just can't imagine that you could register your car in one county, even if you have a residence there, and have the paperwork sent to another. DMV rules are certainly bizzare, but that doen't sound sensible.

If your intent is to just avoid the cost and stress of smogging the car, fair enough. If you intend to mod it, you know that the rules will change the moment you lose the smog pump. It would also make it harder to sell outside of your county.

Yea.......I know what you mean on the rules changing when modified.......but since this is the model year I allways wanted, I don't see me selling it.......ever. specially since I would never have to worry about regestration any more. I think I would just tell dmv that I don't have room for it down here in the valley any more. mother in law has a garage I can keep it in. and they do require the address of it's location to be correct. Kinda cool loop hole. you think? ...........more later..... thanks for in put......bryan.

Be careful if the forms are signed under penalty of perjury it could get ugly. It only takes a ticket or a jealous neighbor to open an investigation. DMV also offers classic car plates which is limited to a certain yearly milage to drive to car shows parades and i belive smog is exempt not sure...just my $0.02
