The RPO designation L-88 was a thinly disguised option that was built for a select group of car enthusiasts that wanted to take the Corvette model and go racing in different sanctioning bodies.
The L-88 option consisted of several Heavy Duty drive train components designed to take more punishing abuse under harsher conditions than normally seen. The engine consisted of many special high performance pieces, the clutch, transmission, ignition system, cooling system, braking system all were built with extreme duty in mind. It was essentially a racing package that a buyer could order and with little modification take directly to the racing tracks and compete.
It was quite costly when ordered as several components were mandated when combined with this engine option. It was made available to the public to homologate certain components for racing purposes, but the L-88 option was not publized by Chevrolet to the general public very much, purposely kept quiet to avoid the pitfalls of the average buyer from checking off the hottest set-up and finding out that its street manners were not conducive to use as a everyday driver.
Its overall rarity of 196 Corvettes built with this option over the '68 & '69 model years make it extremely collectible, as most examples have been abused over their 40, 41 year life span and those examples remaining relatively intact with little modifications usually command a premium price over their counterparts that have missing original drivetrains.
PS.. I can't find any referance to the L88 on this website. If it's the bomb why no love
I guess there aren't too many on this forum with an extra $450K or so to spend on one, so why fuss over something that's out of reach? You can always build or buy a clone for a lot less. A 1969 L88 clone recently won top honors at the pure stock drags, which are held annually. Turning in the 11's with stock tires and open headers, it beat out the hemi Mopars which had dominated for years.
Thanks to everyone for explaining what a L88 is, especially Early Shark's post.
I realy was hoping for discussion about the history and much more detailed information about the history and CF members experiance with the L88
go search for 427 mitch I believe he owned or owns 2 67 L88 cars I am sure there are other people on here that claimed to own them. but like any other rare car everyone has a story to tell them how it relates to them. these cars were built and designed for one thing and one thing only. to race. end of story. in 1969 the option cost over 1K to the cars base price. that was a lot of money back then and I don't think too many people just bought one a stashed it in there shed
