Default car accident :(

so after months of prepping my 69 vette to be road ready, and having it for only one week.. i was cut off today, and hit the guard rail on the driver side (i spun out) and then the rear as well. how much would it cost to get a fiberglass shop to do a new front end, chrome bumper, one headlight assembly and lower grill with light? thanks for your guesstimates guys... i went from being so happy to down in the dumps in about 5 mins this morning

Is your insurance handling it? They will probably total it.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I was in the same place with my 72 coupe two years ago, front end collision. If they have to replace the whole front clip and then all the other little stuff dealing with that they will probably try to total it. I got my estimates and then got the money $12,000.00 and bought the parts from numerous members here, ebay, and where ever I could find them and then took it to a shop myself for the front clip to be put on. My insurance, Shelter, had no clue on how to asess the value of the car. I mean they didn't know squat. I had to find a local guy of some repute and corvette knowledge and he appraised the vehicle at 18,700.00 or something like that. Of course nothing like what NADA, KBB, or other sources crazy pricing values. NADA at the time said like 40,000.00. I think they told me that in my case they would pay to fix the car up to 78% of the value. I did a lot of the disassembly and reassembly myself. But that's what was fun. If you have any other questions please feel free to email or PM me.

hth,

Sully

I'm glad you are ok We can really use pics, pics, pics, and more pics. Where about in NOVA? I lived in Woodbridge and moved back to Norfolk 5 years ago. You can either go to Cooper Corvettes in Triangle or Tony's corvettes in MD. If areas cannot be repaired, you can get fiberglass panels from the vendors either press molded or hand laid. If you go this route try ACI or Vanacors Corvette. Both Vanacor and ACI make their own panels. (ACI is a supplier to most vendors but they will sell directly to you) Also if you have to get a front end the press molded panels are like the originals and will cost more than the hand laid. The hand laid panels will affect the value on your vehicle should you choose to sell it. (If im wrong about the difference in the panels someone will correct me)

Sorry to hear of your misfortune! Glad your ok. Just for future thought, my motto is if you cut me off I will hit you! Never swerve to miss something, you just endanger yourself and your car even more! Same thing goes with an animal. If you were to hit the car that cut you off, and he actually did, then chances are he would be cited and you would be dealing with his insurance as an unhappy claimant insead of yours as a policy holder with a collision claim.

For repair shop in NOVA try Stingrays Autobody in Purcellville. They do a lot of Corvette work.

Folks..my regrets I edited the phone number the one in my original reply was incorrect.

Not a fan of the "never swerve..." rule. I was out one early Sunday morning in my 71, driving a a good rate of speed, and noticed another car coming at me in the 3rd lane on the highway. 2 cars to my right, grass and divider to the left....I locked them up and SWERVED to the right. We went mirror to mirror on the drivers side, and drove away in one piece.

As for the repair question, sounds like you are looking at 10K to 15K if someone else does the work, and you don't want to win any NCRS awards.

Sorry to hear about your accident, that really sucks. I was out the other morning in mine headed to my Daughters house driving along at about 45 mph when all of a sudden a woman in a new SUV talking on her cellphone decides to pull out of a side street practically right in front of me. I locked up the brakes as she's half way out in the roadway in front of me. I just looked at her and shouted "are you kidding me?" She gives the hand wave to go ahead and says "sorry". I yelled at her as I 'm going by to get off her cellphone and she proceeds to give me the finger and yells back F**k You, very classy woman. I had my heart in my throat for that split second when I thought she wasn't stopping, I can only imagine how you must feel. Good luck, hope you get it back better than it was before.

Yeah, and I try and avoid the word "never"...so bad choice of words on my part. ...anyway it's always a judgment call.. so how about;

"If a wreck is imminent due to something impeding your right of way, hit it rather than risk further damage, injury and insurance liability!"

Anyway I'm sure the OP did his best given the situation presented and the time to deal with it. Best of luck!

Do whatever you can to avoid a head on collision! Swerve, rapid lane change, spin the car out, whatever.

Should this ever happen to you, your goal is to walk away from it. The car can be replaced.

I'm sorry to hear about your Corvette, but I'm glad that you are ok. Let me know if there is anything I can do as far as fiberglass is concerned... I will be happy to hook you up!
