I gave my 72 a bath and took her out for a ride but when I got her going my drivers side mirror kept blowing downward due to the wind...it's on a swivel but I guess there is no way to tighten it? I wonder if they make a solid one piece mirror? any suggestions would be helpful.
try a couple drops of blue Loctite first. Sit in the seat, drop a few drops on the ball, roll the mirror around and position your it where you want it. Should be good for awhile
This works just fine as I did mine recently. The only suggestion I have is to use lacquer thinner to soak the mirror in instead of gasoline. It's safer, less chance of removing the silvering on both sides of the mirror and my glass fell off on it's own after 5 hours.
I'm guessing my mirrors were not original, because instead of having rivets, there were 2 screws, and the fix was a bit different.
So in case you have after market mirrors also, I'll describe what I learned.
The problem was not that the plate wasn't tight enough, it was that underneath the plate, was a plastic type washer peice that had cracked, thereby not able to hold the ball joint tight no matter how tight the plate was attached.
To fix it, I went to lowes, and the closest match was some plastic washers that were both thinner, and larger in outside diameter (the inside diameter was pretty close). I had to use shears to trim the sides to get them to fit between the screw posts, and I used a coupld to make up for the difference in the thickness. But the fix works great!
