On my recently purchased 1979 the driver side window rattles so loudly when I close the door I think it will fall out. It only rattles with the window down, The passenger side is not as bad. I removed the driver side door panel to see whats wrong. I found the two window pads on the inside of the window intact and in good shape. It seems like there should be two on the outside of the window also to keep it steady but nothing is there. Does any one know what the problem may be other than 30 years of use and what the fix might be.
my 79 was the same way, i removed the window mechanism, and rebuilt everything, its basically the rollers and the whole lift mech. its probably like mine , just worn out.
if i had to do it again, i would buy the whole regulator assy. instead of rebuilding the old one. some of the noise may be coming from the lock rods. they should have a piece of foam on them to help reduce rattling.

I've been wondering which way to go with my 72. The passenger window
is so loose that I can move it back and forth with my hand. I believe I'll follow your lead and buy the whole assembly.
