Default Wrecking/Recycle yards

Dang, it has been a real long time since I needed to go to a salvage yard.
So I start calling around and WTF? The yards don't know/won't tell you what cars they have.
You can come look for 2 dollars, too walk around.
I guess I am old, I remember when you asked for a part and
if they had it they would say so, if not they got on the "yard party line" and found out who had it.

That sucks. There is a yard near me that is a do-it-yourself setup. They have all the cars organized into sections - Chevys in A, Nissans in G, etc. and the cars are laid out in rows with space between each one. No charge to get in and a lot of the small parts are either free or $5.00. No Vettes though and most of the cars are 10 years old.

Apparently not all yards have moved into the computer based inventory and information age yet.

That is what is smelly, they use to.
Dos based inventory and some even had ISDN to other yards.

I believe they want the 2 bucks so they will not tell you what
is what.

When needing car parts, try www.car-part.com ,you can look the part up yourself and who has it cheapest.

Low inventory is the biggest problems with such search sites.
I just searched for an air cleaner base for my 69 vette and it showed no results.

The labor cost for parting and cataloging a car is too much and significantly eat into the profit.

i gave up decades ago trying to talk to them... they only talk to folks wanting engines and trannys and whole cars... they get more for the salvage metal... nickel and dime stuff is not worth their time... and the insurance liability to let people just go and snoop around is driving them out too... too many sue happy people around..

Where are they located? I have been looking for some parts for my 92 Camaro Vert.

Charging must be a CA thing all the ones I go to are either They tell you where it would be and you take it of or they tell you if they have it and they remove it. No charge to look around.

You must be talking about the pick and pull style yards, they cater to the lowest common denominator and have no idea what is in the yard, nor do they care. They are only of use if you have a used up FWD minvan or econobox, that's all they seem to be full of now.Any legit wrecking operation won't let you anywhere near their yard, likely due to liablity issues. To make matters worse at the Southern Cal PYP yards, they search your tool box, have you walk thru a metal detector and may even frisk you if it looks like you are packing heat!

I know what your saying, I haven't had to pay to walk around. But most yards that I've found only have 10 yrs maybe 15 yrs old tops. The days of going into a yard and taking off the part you need are becoming a thing of the past. I haven't been able to do that for a few yrs.....

Here in Richmond, the biggest pick your part place sound just like you're talking about. $1 to get in, they don't inventory anything, but it's still worth it to me when I go to look for things for my Grand Cherokee. It's hard to beat $15 for a trailer hitch, and $12 for like new seat. Your never gonna find Vette stuff there, and any classic car parts are extremely rare. I've gotten a dome light harness and sill plates for my 70 pickup once a couple of years ago, but that's about it. Hell, you're lucky to find any rear wheel drive car there at all.

many salvage yards have their own EBAY store where most of the worthwhile parts are already stripped and sold on Ebay.. why deal face to face when you have EBAY...

Last time I went to a salvage yard was when a AC dial broke in my Daily driver. Went to the yard found the dial came back and the guy and he said that part is 195 dollars. I told him he could cram the dial right up his *** for 195 dollars.

I've been in every kind of salvage yard, from the old-timer sole proprietor who knows every single part, to the u-pull, to the spotless sanitary shrink-wrapped part kind.

Fair prices almost without exception -- but jokers working at every one. I wonder if he was joking, was going to charge you $1.95, said it a funny way...and you got hostile.

Just a thought,

Steve
