Door Spring Installation
Can anyone give me the dimensions of the door spring installation tool (length before and after the bend, angle of bend)?
It looks like a bent screwdriver. Ecklers sells one for $9.99 but it would cost another $9.99 for S&H. (I can take an old screwdriver and bend it myself.)
I bought the tool and spring from Wilcox.Thought it was impossible doing it.Took a break, came back and by some miracle, kind of popped right into place.I was thrilled. Have patience and good luck. Rick
Take the time to see how the spring is routed on the good door and find a beefy screwdriver and maybe a regular prybar type screwdriver should be all you need. At least give it a try before you spend the bucks, I've done two over the last year and the first took about 30 minutes and the 2nd only about 15. Work it into the approximate position, (note the notch that the main body has to slide into. Once you get it hanging off the top, just work with it by raising it and using the screwdriver to help twist it into place. Good luck!
The main thing to note is that on the bottom of the hinge, there is a very shallow rounded slot that the bottom tine of the spring snaps into, Some of the drawing/ direction are confusing, saying there's a hole there, there's not, the only hole is on the top outer hinge, where the spring front tine slides in. The key is getting the center of the spring to snap into the cut out notch, once this happens, holding it with tool, pound up on the bottom of the spring with a hammer, until the bottom tine seats in the small rounded slot, adjusting it's position with the tool. You see the tool is critical.
