the c3's have more than expected leg room, it's the head room that's lacking. i'm 6'4" and if i sit up straight in my vert, i'm looking forward thru the top rail of the birdcage.
I'm 6'5 and have a 82, the tilt wheel comes in handy and switched from fiberglass tops to the glass tops (no headliner) which allowed about 2 more inches of head room.
I'm 6'2" and I drive my 68 with my shoes off. I've read postings where 6'5" folks drive C3's. I have a C6. Talk about leg room. If I put my foot behind the brake petal, I can barely touch the firewall. If your friend tries out a C6, do check the headroom. Sitting straight back in the seat, I have only about 1/2 of clearance. Should be no problem with a Convertible if the top's down! The passenger's side of the C6 is cramped for me however - it has less leg room - strange.
If you're thinking about a C4 or C5, I'd really recommend taking deep breath and buying a used C6 08. There's a lot of power and a lot of the bugs of the early C6's have been worked out.
On the local news a few years ago, they showed a basketball player in his Porsche. His knees were above the steering wheel and his head was between his knees. I don't remember who it was, but that was a funny sight.
I removed the factory installed power seat mechanism on my 81 C3 and replaced it with standard C3 seat tracks. It lowered the seat a good 3" gave me the head room I was looking for and a more comfortable overall fit.

There is a fellow around town who has a '62 convertible. I've never met him, but I guess he must really love that car. I've only seen him drive it with the top town and I'd bet money he can't fit in it with the top up. He looks over the windshield frame as he drives.
I am 6'5" and weigh about 250 and I drive a 1979 Corvette. It is snug but with the later style seats and the tilt telescopic wheel I am pretty comfortable inside of it. The head room is a little tight, but I usually drive it on nice days with the tops off and that helps. And no my head dosen't stick out over the windshield like Herman Munster.
I'm 6'6" 220 with a 38" inseam and I fit ok. I had to shorten the turn signal but otherwise no problems - even with the top on! It was pretty unbearble until I shortened the turn signal, now its pretty comfortable.
Coming from a C5, the C3 is noticably lacking in leg room comparatively. I could put the seat back far enough in the my Z to stretch my legs basically straight out. Can't do that at all with the C3. Can it be done? Yes, clearly just by looking at the the examples here. But the C5 is the clear winner for overall space. And like someone else already said, the C4 likely isn't ideal due to its strange and awkward door lip.
6' 6" 280lbs here, I own a '71 convertible, and a '72 coupe.
Have owned other C3's and a C4, snug?..sure, you make sacrifices (comfort in this case) for your passions.
Im 5'9"(short) and I think my 68 has pretty good leg room, legthwise at least. I have a 06 pontiac solstice and thats way more cramped though easier to get in and out of.
