Ok ..I thought I needed a whole new set up ..compresser, dryer etc...
Local mech ..said not the case ,so he charged the system with R-12 and said it is holding charge just fine and that these old compressers loose about 1/4 lb per year ... "Huh?"..... also ..that there is a slight tapping of the compresser piston and maybe some "oil charge" would be a good idea ...
Aparently not so easy to find .. I thought that most R-12 had some oil already in it ... but then I know very little about A/C units ...
Where is a good place to find R-12 oil charge?
Probably will not find the R12 oil charge cans anymore, maybe at an swap meet or on Ebay. You can buy the oil, but it takes a special tool to get it into a sealed system. It is a canister that you put oil into and connect to both sides of the system (high and low) so it uses the differential pressure to get the oil in.

Some of the parts houses still have it but they don't keep it on the shelf were people can get to it. You may need to ask for it, corse you will need to have a license to buy it. It has a small amount of freon with it to produce the pressure needed to force it into the system. Or you can buy it in a bottle (mineral based oil) but that will require a special tool to get it into the system.
I have R 12 oil. If you need some send me a PM and I can ship some to you. I got mine at a Car Quest auto parts store. I'm sure Napa will also have it or get it.
