Intake manifold and air cleaner configuration determines hood clearance. What intake and air cleaner are you using?

An automatic transmission will start in first gear as long as you are in D-drive. The selector just forces it to stay in that gear instead of upshifting but it can always downshift or start in a lower gear.

BowTie Overdrives has a kit to make your 3 speed shifter into a 4 speed shifter for the 700R4. $94.50

The intake manifold is the key factor. I have a Edelbrock Performer #2101 and I use the stock air cleaner assembly on my 73 - fits fine.

Performer 2101 will choke a 383. You can easily fit a Performer RPM, Airgap, or even a Victor JR single plane under the stock '76 hood with a 3" tall filter if you use a drop base aircleaner.

I have a Performer RPM and Moroso Low Profile Racing Air Cleaner under my '75 hood, 3" filter and still have 3/4" clearance.

The med. rise hood. 76-79 hood allows RPMs, Victor Jr. & others w/ Holley & 1"+ drop base & about 3" filter.
