Students & Corvettes
I posted this in the Intro Forum Area.....But thought some of you may not drop in there as often as just coming straight to this Forum Area. Thought it would be interesting to share....and allow me to brag on my students!
I teach Architecture & Mechanical Drafting on a High School level. For a number of years I would plan a field trip for my students to visit the assembly plant and the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green. My students really enjoyed the trip especially when the plant worker would pull at least two students from the group to turn the key for the first time on a Corvette fresh off the line!
After bring life to the Corvette they would receive a copy of the build sheet! Never seen a student that didn't smile from ear to ear after the experience! Never seen a student that wasn't a little jealous cause they didn't have the opportunity!
Haven't been able to take the trip in the last 3-years due to raising fuel cost. To charter a bus grew to nearly $1,800.00! Compared to previous years of around $700.00 to $850.00. In previous years we would have a car wash to raise the money.....but it just got out of reach at $1,800.00!
I'm now trying to raise $1,300.00 to build the front elevation of a small cottage house across the front wall of my classroom. I use this cottage to introduce my students to Architecture. Not having much luck with the way the economy has slowed.
If anyone is interested in seeing a 3D model of the cottage in my classroom....shoot me a email addy. Always happy to show off my students work! I don't see a way to upload a jpeg file in this area.
Like I tell my students EVERYTHING in our world is drawn first! So there of 100's to 1000's avenues to take from my classroom! It's not drawing buildings.....But most of the students enjoy the Architectural drawing over Mechanical.
When students first come into my class I have them to choose 3 careers from a short list of 30 or so. Once they have their careers chosen, I ask them to prepare a 2-3 paragraph report on the career with info such as education required, money expected to earn, work environment, etc. This is not an English research paper but a research of what these young minds need to be focusing on their future. Automotive Stylist is one of the career paths on list. 8 out of 10 male students will have this career as one of their three. I guess it's just born into us males to have a love of cars!
