Just bought some new Infinity Speakers for the front dash of my 1980. I have no issues with the drivers side, but I can't seem to get the passenger side one to sit low enough that the speaker grill doesn't keep popping off.
So, two questions;
1) What is the best way (and how) to fasten down the speakers to the dash
2) Is there a way to fasten down the speaker grill cover so they don't keep popping off.
Front speakers are held in with (4) 9/32 screws. The one in the corner by the windshield is the toughest but even three of the four will work. Grill should not pop off. You may have to trim some metal of the basket of the speaker.
Insure the replacement speaker has the same "foot print" as the original speaker - I got mine through Crutchfield's. Even though the replacement speakers I installed were not any higher then the original, the passenger side grill still did not want to stay down, so what I did was use some windshield adhesive to hold it down in place. Been working like a charm since then.
Hmmm adhesive sounds a tad easier than trying to get in with screws and a screwdriver...
Take a 9/32 socket with a 1/4 drive and you get the three bolts in no problem. On the mounting hole by the windshield place the socket on the screw and use a pliers to turn the socket.

I replaced the front speakers in my 79 L-48 with just slightly larger magnets and I had to do some turning and twisting to get them to finally slip into the dash hole. I used the 9/32 socket set on three screws and a 9/32 wrench from my small ignition wrench set to tighten down the screw by the corner windshield. A liitle trying and you need a little patience.
