Have I got a problem!!! I'm trying to remove the outside door handle on my '79. I've removed the two nuts (pita) and the linkage but the handle will not come out of the door. The back side of the handle will come out of the door about 1/2 " and the front side will only move about 1/8" and stops. The handle is loose as you can move it around but it just will not come out of the door. I searched the forum on the subject but it seems that I am the only person that has ever had this problem. Thats my luck!!! Can any one offer any suggestions on how to get it out.
I tried holding the door handle down while pulling it out but it made no difference. The front of the handle seems to be hitting on something in the metal inclosure preventing it from coming out. Any other suggestions?
You were right, the hinge pin had slipped forward out of the rear hole and was under the fibergass in front of the handle. After trying for three hours to get the pin moved back to its original position with no sucess, I finally cut the spring and the pin in half and used lock plyers and a hammer to pull the pin out. The handle came right out. Instead of trying to repair this one I think Iwill replace it with a new one. Hell, I may as well buy both sides being as Im going to paint the car. Thanks for the help.
