Default date mark under hood

I recently bought a '79 vette and written in a white grease pen is the date 6/29/79 with the number 81 under the date, under the hood. Someone told me that it is the manufacture date. Someone else told me that it is a replaced hood, but why then an exact date instead of just '79 to note that it fits a '79 vettel. Who am I to believe? I am an amateur vette owner. Could it have been the 81st car off the line for the day 6/29/79?
Does anyone know if they indeed did write a production date under the hood of some vettes.

Hard to say, but it could have been. On any given work day, there were approximately 500 Corvettes on the assembly line at St. Louis ranging from bare underbodies coming up from the basement to finished cars getting final inspection and driven out to the yard. They averaged 120 cars a day. Your car could have been the 81th off the line on 6/29, but they usually did not track the cars that way.

Usually not. I'm betting 6/29/79 is the date the part (hood) was inspected and 81 was the inspector.

Post a pic and your time/build code.
