Looking to add power brakes to my 71 vette.
Will I need just a new master cyclinder and power boster ??
Any thing else I might nedd to know ??
You will probably need new brake lines from the master cylinder to the distribution block, and of course the vacuum line from the intake manifold to the booster. The rest of the braking system is the same so you shouldn't need to repalce anything else. You may have to drill additional holes for the brake booster in the firewall. BTW, installing a booster is a major pain so plan on spending an afternoon on your back working blindly under the dash.
Make sure you bench bleed the master cylinder and bleed the entire brake system after installation.
Since you are starting from a clean sheet of paper you might want to consider a Hydroboost system instead of the vacuum system if you have a power steering pump.
You’ll need to change the booster and master cylinder. You’ll also need to change the brake switch lever. This is actually one of the best up-grades you can make to the car and it is pretty easy to do.
You will need to open the hole in the firewall as shown below. This is easy since the inner bracket was made to fit both power brake and standard cars so you have a built in templete. When you look from the inside under the dash you'll see what I'm talking about.
So In addition to making the hole larger I guess a 71 power brake cyclinder and a power booster/ and vacuum hook up along with the brake switch (is that for the stop light ) is all I need ??? I had heard I didn't need to change the brake cyclinder. Any extra holes need to be drilled ???
Yes you will need to change the master cylinder! The power brake and non power cylinders are different. You'll also need to purchase the fitting on the back of the intake that will supply the vacuum to the booster.
You can do this with a T but it would be smarter to do this with a new fitting. The P/B fitting has a didicated hole for the brake vauum supply.
You will have to drill two holes. I have some notes on this where we did a conversion about 15 years ago. . . somewhere. I don't think it is on this machine, so I'll have to look on Tuesday to see if I still have them. For the most part I think I've covered it.
