I went car showing about two months ago with my c5. It was about 35 miles from home. I hadn't drove the c5 in a while so I drove another 90 miles to see an old friend in another town. Well by the time I was done it was way after dark, but it was raining as well. So I drove towards home with great confidence knowing there were no deer out with it raining right? I mean they would all be laying down in cover trying to stay out of the rain right? Well less than a mile from my house [I live in a small town] one jumps right out in front of me on the road. Scared the crap out of me. I locked the brakes up best I could and just missed him. My heart was pounding and I was still setting on the road in the rain and less than a mile from home. Had I not been driving the speed limit [55] on that secondary blacktop road, I more than likely would have hit it. As it was the deer was big enough I had to look up to see it. It was either a big doe or a buck with out it's antlers yet. Went home and checked my shorts.
Black Angus Bull walked out in front of me and my Dad back in the 70's. We were in an F150, at night, going about 50 or so. We hit the bull broadside (his, not ours), after my Dad hit the brakes of course. Bull layed right in the front grill. Truck stopped dead in its tracks. Bull slid about 20 yards down the highway, got up, looked around, and trotted off into a field. Bull was crossing the highway right to left in front of us when we hit him. I got out of the passenger side and the ENTIRE side of the truck was covered in Bullsh#t!!! Dad and I laugh about it to this day.

maybe that hanging tree air freshener you have smells like 'girl deer'
Just had this happen to me last Monday driving my wife to the airport at 5:15am. Stupid thing darted out right in front of us, left to right. I was going about 25-30 mph, 1/2 mile from the house. Not very big but still caused damage that will be easily over a grand to repair! I looked in the rear view mirror and it popped up & kept running into the woods.
The insurance appraiser came today to look it over and said the hood needs replacing & paint, need to pull the bumper to check for radiator support damage, replace the grill and then realign everything. Sucks but we weren't hurt.
I hit a deer with my white S-10 blazer, it darted out and hit me at the front right corner. The back end of it swung around and tucked a pile of fur between the rim and tire and proceeded to relieve itself down the side of the blazer at say...50mph which gave it a nice spread down the side.
Always remember , when telling your insurance company that the "deer hit you".
