I am looking at a 1975 corvette to part out. Everything looks fine but one thing. For some reason the VIN number has been moved from the left beside the window to the door jam. Why is this? If it helps the car came from Arkansas. I can't think of any reason why it would be relocated.
I was thinking it might have been stolen at one point too. How is the best way to find out if it was? I am parting it out so it doesn't really matter as long as I am not parting out a stolen car.

The state issued VIN isn't in the same format as the original, so you should easily be able to tell just by looking at the number.
It could be nothing or it could one of two things. The Vette you have is stolen or another stolen vette is running around out there with your VIN. Is there a secondary VIN on a vette? Is so where is it and can you check? If you are able to confirm you have the real car you may want to consider having the police do a check for your VIN to see if someone is running around with it somewhere.

I would think the local police or DMV could look up the VIN number and see if it's stolen.
Before I bought my car, the previous owner had the vin tag stolen off the car. Someone smashed the windshield and drilled out the rivits to take the tag. Mine now has a state issued tag inside the drivers side door jam. The only other place I know of that you can get a partial of the vin is off the motor if it is the original one. The last few numbers of the vin are stamped on the pad. You should be able to figure out the first numbers by what equipment was installed on the car. Oh yea, another place to get the vin would be the tank sticker if still inplace.
