Default broke motor mount.

last week i had a vacuum line come off when i was near home when i got on it. headlights and wiper door came up on own. i found line and all was good. next time i took car out i heard a ticking noise and noticed the shroud cracked from fan hitting it. must of happened when i broke motor mount. i epoxied shroud and now its good. i have an automatic so today i put it in drive and gave it some gas to check motor mount and it is lifting about 2 inches from driver side of course. i used to have to change these often in my 65 chevy. question is do i change same way as my 65? and where and what kind of mount is the best to get. the one in there is not that old from the looks of it. thanks, nutsy. oh, i have a 454 if that matters.

Same PITA as it always is. BB (IMHO) is a littel easier- but not much. I did mine when I rebuilt the front end a couple years ago. I used a small bottle jack under the balancer, pulled the thru bolt, lifted the enging a bit, took out the mount to engine bolts and it slipped right out no problem.

I went back with Energy Suspension Poly- If I had to do it again, it would be those or solid mounts. The solid mounts would be kind of an experiment to see if they stiffen the chassis any. My BB car is NOT a daily driver- more of an occasional weekend fling type driver. I'd go with the poly for the street.

thanks tim, is the balancer the big round thing in front of motor? i was thinking of jacking it up from there but was concerned i could damage the crank or whatever its attatched to. update, i tried to jack up from there ,jacked up about a half inch but was picking car up. is this normal? should i keep jacking it up?

If you have the motor mount bolts out it'll lift a little then lift the motor. DOn't need much just enough to slide the old out and the new in. It is on the end of the crank- don't lift the whole car with it, but lifting the engine a little is no problem.

One half will stay on the engine and the other will stay on the frame. Most mounts are a "locker" style and have a steel tab in the center to prevent total separation. Take the big thru bolt out. Jack the engine up, remove the 3 bolts that hold the mount to the engine. (9/16 head 3/8 USS x 1") drop the original mount, new mount back in, 3/8 bolts back in, drop the engine and put the thru bolt back in. remember which way the thru bolt comes out- life is easier later if you put it back in correctly.

If the engine is lifting 2" you might not have the locking mounts in there. I'm not sure but I don't think they will lift that far.

Here is a picture of the correct mount. This mount was put in to use in Late production 1969 due to the stock non locking mounts breaking.

This was actually a huge re-call campaign by GM on most V8 cars. GM issued what were these cable and bolt kits that were to hold the engine in case the mount broke. It seems that if I remember correctly; when the mount broke loose the engine would lift and pull more throttle on the car.

On my small block there is a power steering 'S' bracket that was a bit of a challenge to get past. PG.

Thanks for replies. Very helpful. I changed many but that was 30 years ago. Didnt know there were ones to prevent total separation. This is good so engine dont hit hood but my shroud is still getting damaged. I will take it out tomorrow and see whats going on. What do you all recommend to replace mine? And where do i get it? Thanks for all the help. Nutsy.

The old anchor number when they supplied them to GM was a 2285. You might be able to cross this at your local parts store, but it will probably be an imported mount.

i got the old one out, its broken. its part # 2285 like WILLCOX said it would be. its exactly like the picture willcox put up. is the metal tab the peice that runs along bottom that is T shaped. if so i have that one but it still allowed engine to lift a couple inches and break shroud. might have to chain it down like the old days. UPDATE- i found one at local auto store and installed. hope it lasts a while. THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP.

Mine did the same thing only it damaged my fan blades make sure to pull your fan and see if it is still ok mine was wiped by the little turd bolts that hold the shrouding together.
