Okay, it appears on of the two rear caliper bracket bolt holes is stripped. It will thread to a point, but it will not torque only turn. What are your thoughts on using heli-coil on this? I believe it torques to 65#. I really don't want to pull the trailing arm and have it essentially rebuilt. Doesn't the entire assembly need to come apart if this is going to be replaced?
If you use an insert do not use a heli-coil here. They work good but this is not a place to pull the coils out. I have repaired these in the past using a thread insert, which is nothing more then a setscrew with the center tapped to the thread size. These brackets also bend if a spindle pusher tool is used on them. To replace the bracket you're going to have to rebuild the spindle because it has to come out to get to the bracket. Try the repair or 1/2-20 if the bolt clears the caliper.
I detailed this repair in the past as well, it may still be here.
Thanks for the help guys. I got it fixed, but it was not without incident.
I was chasing the threads of the good hole and thought what the heck. All was fine until the tap broke in the hole, flush, yes flush. So several trips to Fastenal and later a nut and bolt place I was able to drill out the broken tap, back it out, re-drill with a 29/32nds bit, and tap for a 1/2-20. What fun.
All in all everything worked out fine. I just kept my cool.
